The United Nations has condemned Israel’s recent airstrike in Doha, describing it as a “flagrant violation” of Qatar’s sovereignty and a serious threat to regional stability. The strike, which targeted senior Hamas leaders, marks the first known Israeli military action on Qatari soil and has drawn widespread international backlash.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres issued a statement calling the attack “reckless and dangerous,” urging all parties to focus on achieving a permanent ceasefire in Gaza rather than undermining it. He praised Qatar’s role in mediating hostage negotiations and ceasefire talks saying the country had played a “very positive role” in efforts to end the war.
The airstrike, carried out by Israeli fighter jets, hit a residential compound in Doha’s Leqtaifiya district. Hamas confirmed that its top negotiators survived, but six people were killed, including the son of exiled Hamas leader Khalil al-Hayya and one of his aides. A member of Qatar’s internal security forces also died while responding to the attack.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu claimed full responsibility for the operation, stating, “Israel initiated it Israel conducted it, and Israel takes full responsibility.” The White House confirmed that President Donald Trump had been informed in advance and directed officials to alert Doha, though the message reportedly arrived too late to prevent the strike.
Qatar’s Foreign Ministry condemned the attack as a “blatant violation of international law,” and Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani called for a unified regional response to what he described as “barbaric actions.”
The strike has raised concerns about the future of ceasefire negotiations, with analysts warning that it could derail diplomatic efforts and deepen tensions across the Middle East.
