Kherson Region, Ukraine The United Nations has strongly condemned a Russian drone strike on a clearly marked humanitarian convoy delivering aid to the war-torn town of Bilozerka in southern Ukraine. The convoy, part of a joint mission by WHO, OCHA, and WFP, was targeted while offloading critical supplies including trauma kits, hygiene items, and shelter materials.

UN Humanitarian Coordinator Matthias Schmale described the incident as a “gross violation of international humanitarian law” and warned it could amount to a war crime. Two World Food Programme trucks were damaged and set ablaze, though no aid workers were injured.

Andrea de Domenico, OCHA’s top official in Ukraine, emphasized the need to protect humanitarian personnel and ensure safe access to civilians in need. The Kherson region has seen a surge in drone attacks, with UN monitors reporting over 1,200 civilian casualties in September alone.

The UN is calling for immediate measures to safeguard humanitarian operations and uphold international law amid escalating violence near Ukraine’s frontlines.
