The United Nations has reaffirmed its readiness to assist in diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the war in Ukraine, following a series of high-level meetings involving U.S., Ukrainian, Russian, and European leaders.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres welcomed the momentum generated by recent talks, including a White House summit between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, U.S. President Donald Trump, and several European heads of state. The summit followed earlier discussions between President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska.
“It’s essential that all parties remain actively engaged in inclusive dialogue to sustain the momentum toward a ceasefire and lasting peace,” said UN Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric. He emphasized the importance of direct communication between the Russian and Ukrainian governments, noting that the UN stands ready to support any role it may be asked to play.
When asked about the possibility of deploying UN peacekeepers, Dujarric clarified that any such mission would require formal approval from the UN Security Council.
The war in Ukraine, now nearing its fourth year, has claimed over 13,000 civilian lives, according to UN human rights monitors.
