Caracas, August 24 — In a late-night development, Italian-Venezuelans Amerigo De Grazia and Margarita Assenza were released from detention, alongside several other prisoners. Their release follows sustained diplomatic engagement led by Italy’s Foreign Ministry and state institutions, with support from Minister Antonio Tajani and the Italian government.

Amerigo De Grazia, a former member of Venezuela’s National Assembly, had been held in solitary confinement at the Helicoide prison since his arrest on August 7, 2024. Concerns over his health had prompted repeated appeals from the Italian Embassy for urgent medical attention.

Margarita Paulina Assenza Arteaga, detained since October 2, 2024, was arrested alongside Maracaibo Mayor Rafael Ramirez. Both faced allegations related to state property violations. Assenza was also held at Helicoide.

The two are expected to appear in court on Monday to determine the next steps in their legal proceedings. Restrictions remain in place, including a ban on leaving Caracas. Other released individuals have been placed under house arrest.

Efforts continue to secure the release of Alberto Trentini and other Italian nationals still in custody.
