England all-rounder Chris Woakes is ready to brave a shoulder injury and step in at No.11 if needed, as his side closes in on a dramatic series-clinching win over India in the fifth Test at The Oval.

Woakes suffered a suspected dislocation while fielding on Day 1 and was initially ruled out for the match. But with England needing just 35 runs on the final day to win the match and seal a 3–1 series victory, he’s prepared to put pain aside and take the crease if the situation demands.

On Sunday, Woakes was seen practicing throwdowns at the indoor nets and even suited up in his whites, showing clear intent to make himself available for batting duties.

🏆 He’s ready if needed, says Joe Root

Joe Root, who scored a masterful 39th Test century to bring England to the brink of triumph, praised Woakes’ determination. It’s been a series where players have had to dig deep, and Woakes is no exception, said Root. He’s in pain, yes, but he’s all-in—just like the rest of us.

Root also referenced the courageous efforts across both sides throughout the series, including Rishabh Pant’s heroic stint with a broken foot. It speaks volumes about the fight and character shown. Woakes is the kind of guy who’ll put everything on the line for his team.

England ended Day 4 at 339/6, chasing a target of 374. With victory within reach and the prestigious Anderson–Tendulkar Trophy on the line, anticipation is mounting ahead of Monday’s finale.

🗣️ Root added, It’s been a rollercoaster five-Test stretch over six weeks. The momentum has shifted constantly. We feel confident we can finish the job.
