Rome In a powerful show of unity, global leaders including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen issued a joint statement calling for an immediate halt to hostilities in Ukraine and a renewed push for a just and lasting peace.
The statement, released following high-level consultations, expressed strong support for U.S. President Donald Trump’s position that the current line of contact should serve as the basis for negotiations. Leaders emphasized that international borders must not be changed by force, and condemned Russia’s continued aggression.
“We are all united in our desire for a just and lasting peace, deserved by the people of Ukraine,” the statement read.
The leaders accused Russia of stalling peace efforts and reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring Ukraine is in the strongest possible position before, during, and after any ceasefire. They pledged to intensify economic pressure on Russia, including exploring mechanisms to utilize frozen Russian sovereign assets to fund Ukraine’s recovery.
The statement also previewed upcoming discussions at the European Council and within the Coalition of the Willing, where leaders will coordinate further support for Ukraine and refine strategies to counter Russian aggression.
This joint declaration underscores a growing international consensus on the urgency of ending the war and holding Russia accountable, while ensuring Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity remain non-negotiable.
